Cong Moytura Heritage Society talk 30 March 2016

Comments Off on Cong Moytura Heritage Society talk 30 March 2016

The Cong Moytura Heritage Society will be hosting a talk by Brigid Clesham about George MacNemara and his connection to Cong at 8pm on Wednesday 30th March in Ryan’s Hotel, Main Street, Cong.

George MacNemara is well known within the folklore tradition of the Cong locality as a ‘Robin Hood’ type of character, who lived in the grounds of Cong Abbey and rented its former estate.  Various sources have now revealed some of the facts about the life of George; in particular legal records which document his disputes with the Tasburgh family of whom he was a tenant.  George MacNemara lived in Cong for four decades, was married a number of times and had at least nine children.  He died in 1760 and is buried in the Abbey chancel.

Admission to the talk is free of charge and all are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served. Donations to the work of the Society are welcome.

The talk forms part of the Spring Talks Series. Future talks include:

The 1916 Surrenders by Alex Findlater on Wednesday April 27th;
The Natural Heritage of Cong and the Local Area by Trish Walsh on Wednesday May 25th;
Cong Abbey – A Talk and Walk by Rob Scott on Wednesday June 22nd
